Perhaps one of the most well known deep sea creatures is the Angler fish. They have an organ, a photophore, that produces light. The purpose of the light coming from the light is to attract food and mates. The light is a dim reddish or blue glow. There are over 200 species of Angler fish living in shallow to deep waters. During the night they rise up a little bit to find food along the bottom or in the open waters. Since Angler fish can be found worldwide, could you go off to the coast of Texas and find an Angler fish? Ah,no. It would be highly unlikely, but not impossible. Do remember they are creatures of the deep.
Did you know?
The female angler fish is the mean scary looking one. The males are significantly smaller. When mating the female absorbs the male, and she can do this multiple times. So, when you think you are just seeing a really big angler fish, you are probably seeing two or more angler fish. Since mates are hard to find, they just fuse together.
